Apple Pie!

MMMM Pie! So a little while ago my friend gave me this awesome pi pie plate for my birthday! It has been displayed on a shelf until last weekend where I pulled it into service to make my very first pie!

I like the numbers around the edge. The mathematical pi has about a million decimal points (shortened to 3.14159 in my engineering calculations!) This pi plate has the number pi followed by the decimal points all the way around the edge! Cute (and nerdy, but thats cool now right?)

I chose apple for my first pie for a couple reasons 1. Its a popular pie, 2. I had some apples that needed to be eaten or made into pie!

I grabbed a basic apple pie recipe out of the Better Homes and Garden cook book. I also used their pie crust recipe.

So to start we (I talked my room-mate into helping in exchange for fresh apple pie!) peeled around 12-15 apples,

Then they needed to be cut, and cored which is the most time consuming portion of apple pie, unless.... you have a handy dandy apples core-er slicer thingy!
And Voila!
Amazing! Sliced Apples!

Then you mix in the deliciousness! Some sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour and a pinch of salt. Yum!

Okay! Now we have our filling, now we just need something to put it in!

I made the dough following the recipe from the back of the Tender-flake package! I then divided the dough into 6 equal pieces (enough for 3 pies) and refrigerated them for at least an hour.

Then the dough is rolled out on a well floured surface to about a 1/4 inch thickness and then transferred to the pie plate!

Not to bad for my first attempt! Now we pile the yummy apples into the pie plate as well!

MMM it is starting to look very much like a pie! Now roll out the top crust of dough and make cut outs so the heat can escape! I made mine shaped like the pi symbol, cute right? (Or is that just plain nerdy?)

The Pi was then baked in the oven for about an hour (I wrapped the edges of the pie in tinfoil for the first 45 minutes to prevent them from browning prematurely)

Unfortunately the Pie went to fast to get a full picture but it looks pretty good!

Mmm all that needs is a giant scope of vanilla bean ice cream!

Happy Baking!
